An Overview

British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic, security and consular interests overseas.

We are now seeking a top-quality Policy Adviser who will work at the heart of the British Embassy in Lisbon, in its Political and Economic Section.

You will focus primarily on delivery of our justice and home affairs (JHA) outcomes, but you will be able to flex and support other priority areas, including foreign and security policy work. You will have opportunities to support the full spectrum of the UK’s policy priorities in Portugal. This is a stimulating and rewarding role for someone who can use external networking and specialist policy skills to play a key role in progressing the UK’s priorities in Portugal. Demonstrating flexibility and adaptability will be important.

You will need to be able to work both autonomously and as part of a wider team, including with other sections of the Embassy, reporting to and guided by the Second Secretary JHA (UK diplomat). You will form part of a team of 12 colleagues working on issues including internal politics, economics, communications, energy, education, health and values. You will be encouraged to contribute to the corporate life of the Embassy, for example by joining one of the main staff committees (e.g. learning and development, wellbeing and inclusion).

The Role Entails

  • Research, analyse and report on justice and home affairs issues in Portugal.
  • Research, analyse and report on foreign policy issues.
  • Arrange, attend and report on internal and external meetings and events (including with Portuguese government ministries).

  • Produce a monthly migration report on migration trends in Portugal.
  • Assist with document drafting, including Notes Verbales to the Portuguese Government.
  • Provide ad hoc administrative support to the wider team.
  • Contribute to a positive working culture in the UK’s Portugal Network, including through membership of a corporate committee.
